Backyard Permaculture

In 2015 an Exuma Foundation board member suggested we demonstrate permaculture techniques on our campus as a way to encourage sustainable living. Since then we have been working steadily to implement a design and increase our skill in working with nature to grow our food.

Our permaculture design features:

  • a raised bed vegetable garden
  • mulching and composting for soil building
  • fruit tree guild planting in our food forest
  • banana and papaya circles
  • a poultry system to provide us with eggs and excellent natural fertilizer for our plants

Our food forest is adjacent to the nature trail where an old well and many old fruit trees can be discovered. Our honey bees are also a key component of our design.

We give back to the community by distributing fruit trees, seeds, and with free workshops.
